Letter to editor in Trib - Tunnel of taxes

Tuesday, February 26, 2008
I read with interest your story on the North Shore Connector and how the price -- $435 million -- is already $70 million higher than first planned ("Rising costs for light-rail tunnel spark concern," Feb. 24 and PghTrib.com).

My own projection is that this is a gross underestimate of the final total underbudgeted for this taxpayer-funded travesty.

I find it ironic that the bridges go unmaintained to the point of almost collapsing, but money seems to exist for this white elephant. But the people of Allegheny County have no reason to worry. The Port Authority of Allegheny County will have its tunnel, and its way, even if it means County Executive Dan Onorato's pouring tax on liquor needs to be increased to 20-plus percent.
Pardon my cynicism, but I have seen too much waste of the taxpayers' money -- and there does not seem to be an end in sight.

Wake up, people! Vote with your wallets!

George Silowash, Irwin
